Why all the Freaking Out?

One of the things that has been good about KF's three year swoons is they have knocked the live and die by the Hawks out of me.

UH, we are 6-13 in our last 19 games.
Those 6 wins were against Michigan (2011), at Purdue (2011), NIU (2012), UNI (2012), Minnesota (2012) and at MSU (2012).

Those 13 losses were against one of the worst Minnesota teams ever (2011), blown out by MSU (2011), at Debbie (2011), Oklahoma (2011), ISU at Kinnick (2012), Central Michigan (2012), blown out by PSU (2012), At Northwestern (2012), at Indiana (2012), Purdue at Kinnick (2012), blown out at Michigan (2012), Nebraska (2012).

1999 - 0-8
2000 - 3-5
2001 - 4-4
2002 - 8-0
2003 - 5-3
2004 - 7-1
2005 - 5-3
2006 - 2-6
2007 - 4-4 (with no OSU and Michigan)
2008 - 5-3
2009 - 6-2
2010 - 4-4
2011 - 4-4
2012 - 2-6
2013 - 2-6 consensus predictions

We were paying Hayden close to $200K in his last year, and he finished 98-61-5 in the Big Ten.
We are paying Ferentz $3.65 million/year, and he's currently 100-75 in the Big Ten.

You have to remember how horrible Iowa football was before Fry arrived.
Looking back, that 1999 team was exactly "cupboard bare".

Looking back, that Penn State game in 2008 changed the course, for the better, for a few years.
Looking back, that Wisconsin game in 2010 has changed the course for a few years, and we are still on that course.

Hayden was a salesman of Iowa football. Hayden has some lean teams, a la 92-94, but would create optimism.
With the NIU game tied at 27-27, I would have much more trust in Hayden's play calling than what we saw with Greg Davis and that out pattern.

People like coaches, like Bret Bielema, because they are constantly selling the program.
We see someone, in Kirk, who rarely is on sports radio, selling Iowa football.

Hayden hasn't coached in 15 years, but I bet that more people nationwide, when you ask them about Iowa football, Hayden Fry would be the top answer.

The 2010 Northwestern game did more damage than the 2010 Wisky game. The very next week after the Wisky game Iowa pounded MSU for their only loss of the year and was still very much alive for a B1G title.

Hawks escaped the next week at Indiana and then blow it in Evanston. Pryor's 4th and 10 scramble beats the Hawks in Kinnick and then the wheels completely fall off in Minneapolis.

True, after the MSU game, I thought that we were going to win the rest of the games that season.

Great point. We always talk about the Wisconsin fake, but forget about the Northwestern game (where our DL was gassed) and the 4th and 10 by Pryor.
Some redemption by beating Missouri in the bowl games.

That's the one thing that Kirk has SOLID support from the fan base is bowl preparation.
Other than the USC blowout in the 2nd half in January 2003, you can't point to any other bowl game that the team wasn't prepared, etc.
Oklahoma was just a far better team than we were, and if Vandenberg played above average, it might have ended up being a one-score game.

Besides the fact that this board is littered with a bunch of morans.

NIU is probably the best team Iowa plays until going to Columbus. I would give them the edge over both MSU and Minny.

The offense looked better Saturday then it did at any point last year. And that is with a new QB and some new faces at WR getting major snaps.

It appears we have a legit deep threat at WR and I would bet his playing time will significantly increases as we progress towards the B1G season. Remember, he hasnt even been with the team for a month.

The running game was great and I was really impressed with Blythe.

If this team isnt 4-2 going to OSU in October I will be shocked. I think they will be 5-1.

--The offense may look better, but GD is still the coordinator.

--MSUs D will be a lot less likely to make our offense look so "good"

--Minny is a defensive and special-team scoring machine. Our Special Teams are no longer "special"

--Yes, we have a legit deep threat, probably two or three. And we'll go to them on 3rd and 1/2 a yard from our own 16 yard line with regularity. And teams will be pretty watchful any time Powell enters the game.

--Every one of our 11 remaining opponents will, if they so choose, be able to convert a fake punt at the most inopportune (for us) time.

Geez, why would anyone be ****** that the MAC owns us and we cannot score in the second half of games? Oh yeah, I do not want to leave out that we lose the same way game after game and do nothing to change the tide. Ferentz makes more than the entire staff of NIU, yet they school us in every aspect of the game, just like every other coach making $700K or less. Had NIU thrown more instead of sticking with the run, that game would have been a blowout. Our defense still cannot figureout coverage assignments and are baffled by go routes. In case this doesn't do it, look at our offense and count how many guys we have within 8-10 yards of the line of scrimmage. We do nothing to clear zones out or get guys vertical. The addiction to the flat route has been an epic fail since pick 6 Stanzi, yet that is our one and only go to play. Gotta love the 3 yard slant pass in traffic on 3rd and long. Oh yeah, I think we converted one third down in the second half against a MAC team who lost a lot of key players on both sides. Clearly Ferentz has the program on the right track Section 136. Sorry for raining logic down on your A**.

I agree with the first half sentence, that NIU is good and no one should be surprised we lost

but I will be surprised if we are better than 2-4 after six games

Even though I predicted this loss, I think I know why folks are so ticked off even though all of us saw improvement on Saturday........

1. First home opener loss in 10 years I think.

2. Same old kf trends repeating themselves.

3. Getting a lead and then letting up.

4. Finding a way to lose the close ones.

5. Stupid offensive play calls.

6. Another team runs a fake punt and has great success with it.

7. Overall lack of aggressiveness from the top.

8. Iowa had 200 yards rushing with a 100 yard performer and still lost.

9. Faced a team that lost a lot on their D and still could not pound and pound, or the coaches would not allow that.

10. No pass rush.

11. A very, very bad secondary.

12. With all the talk of outstanding tight ends, they were rarely targeted through out the day.

I am with you to a certain degree in that I think they win their next three straight. Not sure about beating minnie at this point, though.

How is it letting up or not being agressive when they continued to throw it when they could have just played it safe and ran the ball? You think throwing it deep on third and one is not being aggressive? That was the definition of agressive. Jake was also airing it out on the other interception as well.

Rudock threw for more yards in his first start than JVB had in a game all of last year. The offense also put up more yards than any game last year. They had more yards at half then they did in most games last year. There is definite improvement and Rudock will only get better with more experience. The line played great. The defense played great against the run. The faster Powell can master the offense the better. That kid is crazy fast.

I shouldn't have to explain this to anybody that knows football, but I'll do it again. The scenario: It's 3rd an 1, 2nd half, you have the lead, your O-Line has a 40 pound per man advantage vs their D-Line, their D is tired, IOWA NEEDS THIS FIRST DOWN, and you run a deep pass play with no intention of going for it on 4th down if the pass play doesn't work. That is not be aggressive, that's being foolish. If still don't understand why this is dumb, you can either listen to Jon Miler's podcast where he says the same thing or.......................well, I can't help you.

Which is good but they hit the brakes in the second half. The false start on the QB sneak was inexperience but throwing a deep pass on 3rd in 1 was not a good choice. The WR screen pass on 2nd and long was pretty bad too. But the screen to Bullock that he dropped was a great play call. Overall the offense exceeded my expectations and experience will come through the year

Well the play was there for the taking so it really wasn't a bad call. They didn't execute it was all. If he completed the pass people would be talking about the great call and how they loved how agressive we were. There is no guarantee that they get a first running either in fact I'm pretty sure they were expecting it. Hence the play call and why I don't have a problem with it. I think with more experience or maybe more time working with Powell that I a TD and the earlier long pass to Powell would have been a TD as well. the D couldn't have been too tired I believe they had a couple three and outs in the 4th.

MORANS.... I just LOVE it! Keep drinking the Kool Aid you MORON! This team will go 4-8 if they are lucky, I am sticking with 2-10... 5-1 midseason!?!? Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Are you DRUNK!? No, your a MORAN!

Even when the inside joke is explained, some people simply can't be helped.

Congratulations! You've won the Golden Foot. Because a man like you should have only the finest foot placed in his oral orifice.

I believe that how dominate the o-line and RBs had been the better play was to run the ball. Then go deep on after the first down, makes more sense to me.

A conservative, playing not to lose guy like you can't understand the mind of a coaching staff that is playing to win, and wants to step on NIU's throat and finish them off.

Hawkeye offensive strength is: O-Line, running back position.

VS.

NI whose defensive line is: Outweighed by Iowa's O-Line by 40 pounds per man, and is replacing 8 guys on defense from last season.

SCENARIO: Iowa ball with 3rd and 1 and Iowa needs the first down

What has a higher probability of getting one yard and the first down that Iowa needs?

a) running Iowa's running back who averaged 5 yards per carry

b) running a deep pass play with a qb who had not taken a snap before this game
