I think it's pretty simple.
He's worth more to Louisville than Iowa.
Excellent player. Clearly liked by teammates.
Valuable to Iowa, but not a difference maker.
To Louisville, he could be difference maker.

I don't think we should feel let down. As someone pointed out, he didn't mislead fans. The dude went and played in a meaningless bowls game. Maybe he was taking one last shot at improving his status. Or maybe he just wanted to finish out his season, cause evern under these new rules that's the right thing to do, even if most don't.
 

Tyler Brown from James Madison committed. Had just recently had a visit with Alabama, not sure he went or was just offered the visit. Chose Iowa over UCLA, FSU, LSU, Wisky & more. From article:

Brown recorded 93 tackles combined across two seasons with the Dukes. He is listed at 5-foot-10 and 193 pounds and will come to Iowawith two seasons of eligibility remaining.

According to a couple podcasters they said Brown and Diaz were their top targets since the portal opened. Also said they don’t believe they are done with obvious needs at P and LS. Also saw they were targeting a RB from an FCS school with 2-3 years left

Expected but still sad. With all the turnover in defensive players this year, it would have been preferred to keep guys like Allen & Entringer. It's hard to replace that much experience at the beginning of next season. Next man in.
 
If true, that could explain a few things about his choice of team. Another Big Ten team might have been more or less, off the table, as an option. Same goes for many prestige programs in the SEC and ACC. Programs do have standards and generally like to avoid someone else's problems.

If that is the case, he'd be looking for a program that would give him a second chance. Louisville has a relatively good football program. They also have a lot of player turnover.

Too bad if true. It definitely would explain why a player who is a team captain and had already said he was coming back, suddenly exited.

It wouldn't be easy, but if he genuinely has solid character, he would come out and say what happened, apologize, and state he will try to be better moving forward.

I am not sure if that passes the smell test. Typical penalty for something like "cheating on a final" would be a score of 0 on that exam. That might make him fail the class, potentially threatening academic eligibility, but it would not result in expulsion. And he would have a whole semester to get back in good academic standing.

To get expelled, it would either have to be a second-offense, or something much more egregious than cheating on an exam.
 
From videos, he doesn't look to have great break-away speed, but he is elusive and strong. Turning 20 yard gains into 50-yard TDs is great, but I don't think he will do a lot of that. However, last season we had a bunch of 7-yard gains that could have been 20-yard gains if we had made someone miss or run through arm-trackles. At the FCS-level, it seems like Phillips was very good at making that first guys miss or bouncing off him.

I didn't watch his entire highlight video, but all the runs I saw he basically ran through holes you could drive a truck through.
I sure hope the Hawks didn't pay him much to come, because I'm pretty sure any of the 3 RBs currently on Iowa's team could have had similar stats with those holes. I just hope McNeil now doesn't jump into the portal, because he's a Wadley-type RB with quickness that neither Moulton or Xavier have. And this SDakota RB isn't quick either.
In many ways, I don't get this portal pickup. RB is one of the deepest positions on Iowa's team going into 2026.

He reminds me of Leshon Williams, who had some good moments for us. With Patterson and Washington on the way out, this addition seems to make sense. He looks plug-and-play, and I think he could step in for our current guys without a dropoff. I am not sure if he is an upgrade, we will have to wait and see.

I, too, am really interested in Nathan McNeil, I think he is our best bet for a difference-making RB.

May not have been a school rule but a team rule where if they are caught cheating or something of that nature they are off the team hence transfer or not compete on the field. Could also be something on how this allegedly happened. Is it a case of someone doing his work or how did it go down. Who knows as it’s all allegations at this point

Without the Gronowski Plowski he seems to fill the gap as a hybrid back or more of a short yardage type of guy. 5’9” and 225 is a little different structure than other guys in the room. Can’t have too much good depth at that position as we have seen in the past
