Jon could you ask coach why we keep running 3yd pass routes when we need 7yds.It makes no since at all to throw them the ball when they have no chance of getting a 1st down. It's like we have givin up on that set of downs.Frustrating to watch.

Hope you DVR-ed the game so you can re-watch.

We were playing the best or second-best D in the conference. JVB took what was available.

Was it his "best" game? No. Did he play a good game and manage it well? Absolutely. First series aside, he was fine.

ColoradoHawkeye and I agree that JVB needs to be pulled for a series or two, get him a chance to "see" things objectively.

You can call in on Wednesday night and ask him yourself. I'm sure Jon doesn't want to end up on the bad boy list trying to satisfy a strangers curiosity.

JVB missed at least two TDs today. One on a TE wheel route on the play Weisman motioned out of the backfield, one on the underthrow to Davis on a lost route, and once when he threw underneath despite CJF breaking uncovered into the middle.of the field with a two deep safety look.. JVB did not play well at all.

As far as the OPs question you do realize each play has multiple recievers running multiple routes at multiple depths right? Its up to the qb to.get.the ball to the right guy.

Exactly, you don't run 5 receivers to end zone on every play. You almost always have one underneath/safety route. The combination of our receivers not getting separation and Vandenberg panicking with no pressure on him and dumping it off is the problem. I saw nothing wrong at all with play calling yesterday.

I love the guy. I think he has potential but to think he has progressed in his abilities is not being objective. He has continually missed his receivers because of accuracy issues. He still cannot slow things down to be able to scan the field to locate open receivers. He continues his happy feet and throws off his back foot, and rarely sets both feet. When he does he makes good solid throws. Still has not developed a soft touch on RB screens. He missed two yesterday that would have had huge gains. These are issues of a first year QB not 5 th. I still see the potential and hope he can develop the last half of season. But to say WR/TE are not getting open is simply not accurate. He just isn't currently able to see them.

Yes I do know how good there defense is just don't understand why we have guys run pass plays that don't benefit us.He's been doing it all yr..If we need 7yds then run a 8yd down and out and if it doesn't work at least we tried to get a 1st down.Every one on the team has progressed real well and when you have a 5th yr senior at QB you would think he would make better decisions and perform at a higher level.Do I expect more from him,you bet and hopefully he comes around and plays better the rest of the season.Yes I do watch all of the games and go to all of the home games.James hasn't performed well all yr not just this game.I expect more from a 5th yr Senior but I don't think pulling him is the answer.Back-up probably not ready.JMO Go Hawks

You clearly already knew the answer to your original question, Grandpa. :)

Ya I know just frustrating to watch when you see everyone else really coming together as a team and then watching our passing game go backwards. If we could fix it then I think we could be really dangerous.Hopefully we can.Not giving up on him yet.

I think in order to go backwards you actually had to be forward. This inept passing game has yet to step forward.

For comparison check out the passing stats for the B1G games this weekend. JVB did have > 50% (barely) completion rate. If you look at the stats only NW had over 60% completion on 11 of 17. Their avg yd per completion was less than 4 yds. All other B1G teams were below 55%. Iowa threw the enough passes to augment its running game. Indiana threw 54 passes; the most, Michigan the least, 15. I am wishing for > 60%, but the Iowa passing game is average for the B1G.

My intent isn't to come to the defense of JVB, but to put into some context where Iowa is as an offense within the conference. To date the MSU defense was most likely the best defense Iowa has played. Our defense has held two offensively challenged conference teams to <= 16. In looking ahead at the schedule their does not appear to be a defense better than MSU on the schedule, but right now our offense would not rank ahead of any of the teams left. However, it can be competitive with those on the schedule because Iowa can run the ball.

Running routes short of the first down is one of the main components of the Greg Davis offense. Ask any Texas fan. That's why Kirk hired him, nobody pounds out 5 yard completions on 3rd and 8 like Greg Davis, nobody.

So, this thing is legit?

He has been doing that ALL SEASON. Why hasn't KF, GD, a running back, offensive lineman, water-boy, ANYBODY addressed this to Vandy?! And the opponents KNOW all they have to do is blitz (every play like they do), and Vandy will immediately throw to a check off receiver that is at most 2 yards down the field and DOUBLE-COVERED. There HAS to be open guys down field (Martin-Manley, Davis, and Fedo ar AT LEAST average in talent/speed/size).

Vandy is playing RIGHT INTO the opponents hands. They show a defense and he either checks into a running play going right into the blitz for a 2-yard loss, OR he does a 3-step drop and throws to a COMPLETELY COVERED receiver basically at the line-of-scrimmage.

IRONICALLY, Vandy has NO TOUCH on balls less than 10-yards and receivers are lucky if they even catch it (let alone actually get a first down). Vandy's strengths have always been 15+ yards down the field. He has a live arm and very good arm strength and even accuracy downfield. David has made NO USE of Vandy's talent, but instead playing to Vandy's weakness!!
