Iowa Shrine Bowl - Paulsen Boys

Not sure if this was posted. The Iowa Shrine Bowl was played last Saturday. During the week, apparently one of the Paulsen twins dislocated his arm. Not sure if was his elbow or shoulder. This probably won't be a chronic problem and he can progress after recovering. I had heard this right before I went to the game. I confirmed after seeing the one on the sideline with his arm wrapped & in a sling.

It's too bad that he had to miss the game, especially the chance to experience the game with his brother. On a side note, my nephew spent some time with them during the week and said they were pretty decent guys. The South beat the North pretty handedly. Ryan Boyle played pretty well and broke the D down with knowing when to throw or run. He was the difference in the game, IMO.

Wish I could see some highlights. Thanks for the updates though. The bolded part isn't surprising. Boyle dominated the state of Iowa for 4 straight years. I'm excited to see what he can do at the next level.

the program listed him as 6' 2" but to me looked much shorter than that. It will interesting to see how Iowa uses him or if he will contend for QB after Beathard. He reminded me of the Northwestern QB's of years past, to a point. I think he could have that potential. He does a great job of buying time with his legs than looking down field. I was telling my dad he looked like Fran Tarkenton or Doug Flutie running around.

He was quite slithery back there and difficult to get a solid hit on.

Mel, did Boyle look like he could possibly have a legit shot as a dual threat?

I've seen Boyle play and am a big dowling fan. But to me, he seems like a watered down version of AJ Derby. Smaller. Looks to be around 6'0 or 6'1. Likes to tuck and run as his first option. Not the biggest arm. Got by with the help of playing on a dominating high school team that decimated its opponents at nearly every position. Boyle completed around 40% of his passes at the shrine game and ran more than twice as many times as he completed passes. Maybe he will be a great dual threat qb, but how often does our offense cater to running qbs? I believe the last time was Brad Banks over a decade ago.

Yes. His size worries me at the D1 level, though. He reminded me of a dual threat but he was going against high school players, but good ones. I'd worry about him lasting an entire season taking so many hits. But, I was impressed how he used his legs to scramble and buy time to find receivers down field.

I agree. Brad had the capability to run but I believe they coached him to still look for the pass first which he often did. Brad did a good job of using his legs when there was nothing down field or picking up 3rd and 8's.

Surprised Boyle didn't end up at KSU.....Ever since Snyder came out of retirement it seems all his QB(s) are thick guys who will truck dudes on the read option. Who cares if the QB only completes 57% of his passes when he decides to keep it and is getting 5 yds. a pop.

Well, we haven't exactly HAD a "running QB" since then, at least one who could keep opposing defenses honest with his arm.

Well, he's taller than Johnny Manziel anyway, fwiw.

Boyle did light up a d back after a run when going out-of-bounds. It was a legit hit as it happened right at the sideline. He popped him with his shoulder & decleated the guy.
