David Johnson

Johnson was a WR coming out of high school. Gained weight at UNI to play RB.
Johnson was not a WR coming out of high school. He played RB at Clinton and weighed 215-220 lbs. I know. I coached against him and was the only D that held him under a 100 yds. rushing. I don't understand why people post stuff when they don't know what they're talking about.

Except that they didn't pick on the outside LB (leo) on the first play. They just beat Lomax one on one (I think Lomax thought he had help from the WILL (Fisher) on the inside, but Fisher didn't read the QB well and then slipped). The LEO was way to the left of the formation (his right) and had the TE in the flat away from the play. Nice try, but you're absolutely wrong. P.S. UNI (Johnson) beat the MIKE LB (Alston) twice, not the LEO or WILL.
Yup that's certainly the short story of it.. Alston may be the worst MLB of the KF era... At least last 10 yrs or so. He was just slow out of position couldn't get off blocks over ran plays in pursuit. I know it sounds like I'm piling on the kid... I guess it's cause I am.. Oh well glad that season is over.

Don't feel like it's really piling on with the Rose Bowl. This was the second year in a row that the game was over within minutes. We stood no chance against TN, and even OK was a tough game for us.

For some reason we don't get out of the gates fast anymore in bowl games.

As for DJ, I think I read an article talking about how he was a bit of a head case in HS. Didn't seem coachable, and that's why a lot of teams passed on him. Had the talent, but no one was sure he could put it together.

Indeed. Thanks for giving us definitive information based on actual first hand knowledge of evidence. We could use much more of that.

I do not personally know David. However... I am from Clinton, know a lot of people who do personally know him, and have watched him play a lot of HS football. For the record:

David was NOT a "head case" in HS. Never heard of any issues like that. He was a good kid by all accounts.
David had very good grades in HS. Honor roll kid. I do not know how he performed on the ACT/SAT.

One knock on David at the time of recruitment was that he occasionally "took plays off". This is true. I've seen it. However, he played RB, WR, DB, and special teams - so that should be considered. He played hard 99% of the time.

He was BY FAR the most explosive player in the MAC his senior year, and put up ridiculous stats despite the fact that the River Kings were really good that year, most games were total blowouts, and the starters were often sitting by mid 3rd quarter to early 4th.

He sure would have looked good in Black & Gold, but Purple & Gold suited him just fine.

I agree. I remember him coming out of Clinton now and he was no WR. Was always a stud RB.
