I know Kulick really well (personally)........
Just read his bio via HawkeyeSports, you weren't lying, dude played WR in HS. You might be right with your bold prediction, very possible that he has a little added athleticism too his tough hard nose typical Iowa fullback attitude. Maybe he will be like a Marcel Reece for the Oakland Raiders. Might open up the playbook because now team will have to account for his potential receiving ability. Good stuff. Can't wait to see him in action!

They only completed 4 passes to the FB last year and one of them was Kulick who took it 22 yds. Kulick was an all-conference WR and is a much better receiver and open field runner than Cox/Plewa. When iowa is in their 22 package, teams are playing a lot of man and committing LB's and Safeties to the point of attack and not accounting for the FB in coverage, so with a receiver like Kulick, Iowa will play action to him more. They showed a little of that in the spring game. I just hope Kulick blocks as well as those 2, but I think they'll play another FB as well to keep Kulick from getting too beat up.............

I wish they could get the FB involved just a little more, and on some pass attempts would be great. It would really loosen the D that much more.

Anthony Nelson. This is the pass rush answer. I don't know a thing more than what has been said, his measurables, and the change in measurables that coincide with the right age for those to produce a breakout season. A Nelson/Nelson pair of starting DEs not only wont surprise me. I expect it.

I coached him and work with his mother, so I know a 'little' bit about him and what's going on at Iowa right now. He is 'majoring' in following Doyle as a strength and conditioning coach, so I KNOW he is a work out freak...and like you said, hopefully teams will have to account for him and can't send that extra guy in the box....if they do, I think they make them 'pay'! Go Hawks!!!

We need to call him 'Major' Nelson after the 'I dream of Jeannie' theme (That's what I've been calling him)...........And I've been saying it for months, that he will be an force off the edge!!! He was unstoppable in the spring game!!!

I think Mark Morehouse mentioned something about if both Nelson's are in it's considered... a Full Nelson.

I went with "Other". It wouldn't be a "surprise" if I picked an actual player--in advance--as a "surprise" player.

That, or "Termini". Dude is the end-all, of course. Actually, he is plural end-alls. Earlier in life, he was called "Terminus". Quite a surprise, really.

Ryan Boyle

I will say he catches 25-30 passes this year.
I was going to say that I bet he doesn't even play this year until I saw that Parker is out for quite awhile...that might createe an opportunity for him, but I will still bet he doesn't catch 25-30 passes....

A bit of a reach, but there is room behind MV and Kittle to catch passes. He is physically strong enough already to handle catching passes underneath. He can sit down in a zone with a dig route, comeback or whatever and take the hits.

I don't know. I voted Snyder but that is more hope than anything (I don't know much about him). I hope the surprise player is a WR, DE, and/or Snyder.

I hope not. We already know what we have in Bowers. Plus, the quickness is not there. Go with the future.
You know what we have in Bowers? You've been to practice?

'We' know what we have in Bowers? Who's we? You're a coach? You're at practice? You have any idea what 'we' have in Mends who has no experience? You don't think Bowers could and has steadily improved since being thrown to the wolves as a RSFrosh? Well, go to Wallaces interview on HR. All he talks about is Bowers, especially everytime the Will spot is brought up. When someone tries to insinuate that Mends is more physical or athletic, Wallace shuts him down right away and says they 'all' are fast and physical, etc... There's reasons why I say what I say, and it ain't my 'emotions' or uninformed opinion like most on here. This interview came after my prediction, hmmm, how do I know this stuff?

Thanks for your clarification

Great Post! Way to show some actual football knowledge! I was very disappointed that a few years back we so underutilized Champ Davis. He could run the ball and could certainly catch it as well. We hardly ever used him. Hopefully this time will be different. We could really hold the defense honest a lot more if we can hit the FB out of PA. If teams keep stacking the box and crashing hard hopefully we can hit the FB on PA for some big gains. Hopefully home run hitters like Wadley can break some big ones against those strategies. IF we can do those things and make defenses play our run game more honestly we will be able to run the ball that much better.
I voted for Mends because: I think he is a physical freak, will see lots of action, in his limited action last year he showed a clutch ability. I would also vote for: Kulick, Taylor, Scheel, Nelson, Nelson, and Fant.

I definitely like A. Nelson as a 3rd pass rusher, and think he could provide some quality depth on the edge, but I doubt he usurps either M. Nelson or Hesse as a starter.

You can stop with this stuff in this thread. By definition when you are picking a player who "surprises" you are going with someone you haven't really seen, but feel they have a chance to impress. Nobody is at practices enough to be making coaching decisions, including you...unless you are insinuating that the coaches talk to you about this stuff.

That said, here are the players I think can impress this year, and just to clarify for Icke, it aint because I'm a coach or at practice, but it is because I am one of the millions of internet "experts" around the world. :)

OL - James Daniels, not much of a surprise here. When you get that much playing time as a Tr Fr it bodes well for his overall career.
RB - Toks, I think he wins that 4th spot and is the next "big thing" on the interweb boards
WR - Scheel, I think he is the starting X receiver by the end of the season
DL - Matt Nelson will have plenty of opportunity to impress. Isn't going to wow you with sack numbers, but will be solid in the run game
LB - Mends, I think he wins the WLB job
S - Taylor had a solid first year, I think he continues to build on that

Snyder is a great athlete and one of those 'smart' former QB's that have excelled at Iowa. It won't surprise me if he is better than Lomax by the end of the year. He

the Bowers conversation had nothing to do with 'surprise' players. There are some who hijack threads

Some tool always 'hijacks' a positive thread (and it wasn't me brother) to badmouth a coach or player. There was no need for the jerkoff to bad-mouth Bowers, so I called him out. Everyone was just talking about positive things about different players up until that point.
