stadium atmosphere

Just wondering for if anyone who went to the game notice a significant change in music selection and sound quality? I was watching on TV so it was hard to tell if anything changed.

Yeah, I noticed some change. The music during timeouts and leading up to some plays was really loud. I myself am not a big hip hop fan which was played a lot more and loud and for a long time during stretches. If you are going to play some really loud music sometimes maybe play a montage of different clips during the one minute loud barrage.

New Herky was sort of weird and non existent during the game. I was nice to see the visiting fans way up in the north endzone.

I think the band needs to get more play time during the game and I bring this up all the time. They are after all the University Band.

I liked that they played plenty of replays of game film from last year.

The music was better. They showed more full-screen replays. The videos were better and of higher quality.

The video they showed as the team took the field was better. More or less the same sandman/back in black music, but a little shorter and just better.

They still refused to show any remotely controversial replay. Hillyer fumble and other plays weren't shown.

Overall, things were improved.

The visitors section looked like a purple band 6 rows high that stretch across the north end zone stands. The visitors band was no longer immediately behind south goal posts, but tucket into NE corner. It was nice that UNI didn't get to exit the tunnel surrounded by their fans.

I thought the changes were small, but very noticeable and great. Louder music between UNI plays, that fills that little dead void from when the fans ramp up between plays. Much better music throughout the whole game, with many different songs that they had never played. I thought it was night and day better. Of course you can alway have fans picking nits about what style of music, etc. I think the point is to keep the fans engaged, and into the game, which I felt they did.

The video stuff was also 100% better. Full screen HD replays, they had 3 different things going on the 3 different video boards I noticed at one point.

Overall I really think they did a much better job.

The music selection was better, and the PA announcer was easier to hear....more clear and crisp.

Kinnick is once again overloaded with ads. It's sickening. They even have a sponsor for the National Anthem. A friend I sit with who is a veteran was surprisingly offended by that. The National Anthem should be "sponsored" by every man and woman who ever served our country...not Nationwide. It was bs, got to admit.

They finally power-washed the outside of the press box. Anyone who went to a game in 2013 probably noticed how dirty it looked. It looks better now.

We have a new football Herky. He looks like Basketball Herky, but with football pads on. I always liked the old football Herky, so I'm going to have to get used to this.

If you watched the BTN previews, you probably heard them say that Iowa's new Football Operations Complex is a "game changer". It really is. this thing is just massive, and you have to see it for yourself to believe it. What a huge building!

I sit in section 108 (east side, 12 yard line, south partition). When the music or announcements were blaring, I couldn't talk to the folks next to me. Way too loud.

Different music was played, but the clips were 10-15 seconds long. Not sure if the 66K got fired up from that or not.

Still are not showing other game scores as often as I'd like.

I'm troubled by the news that they had a sponsor for the national anthem. WOW. Time to let Gary know what you think

Also, I was under the impression that it was not very sportsmenlike to play loud music when teams are in the huddle..and some venues do it on purpose (PSU) and others don't.

I wonder if they fear just the sound of the stadium and the nutty thinking to fill in all 'dead air' with sound. Like the people who can't be in a car or in their house without a TV or radio on.

they are probably unaware of the rules change within the conference.....

I thought the music was greatly improved. Early on I heard Bush "Machinehead" once, but never again. 3rd down songs were all rock songs ( as they should be), and were changed up (For Whom the Bell Tolls, Hells Bells, Thunderstruck, Welcome to the Jungle). I was pleasantly surprised by this.

The music in between dead periods/timeouts/quarters was a good mix of pop/hippity hop; and in my opionion, kept different fans engaged. Another pleasant surprise.

One suggestion I'd pass along, STILL... Get the band and the sound guy a walkie talkie so they don't continue to fight for playing time. I heard them each playing at the same time a few different occasions. On one occasion, it seemed the band and sound guy got into a pizzing match. It came off as bush league.

As for the video board/video ribbon: give me more stats and a few less ads, pleeeeeeeeaaaaaasse!!

as as a student vet, thank you for posting his email so I could shoot ol garbar my thoughts, respectfully of course.

I noticed a lot of differences, some big and some minor tweaks.

The opening was much improved. I really like the new video that had current players and highlights. The whole video piece looked sharp. The team walking out to Back and Black is classic but this time it did not feel like they were standing out there forever before running onto the field. I also very much like Herky coming out on the 4 wheeler instead of being carried on the stand that looked as if it would topple at any minute. I am ok with the new Herky as well. To me it was time for a revised look and it still can be tweaked a little. They put the words up for the Kinnick speech and I was surprised how it ends because I never could make out what he said before. I am a little tired of the speech but the words were at least a twist.

The sound was much more crisp but I must need my hearing checked because it was not loud enough for me sitting in the south end zone. I like music so I want to hear it in the down moments and want variety. I also enjoy a rocking student section so I do not mind if they mix in what the students like for tunes even if it's a top 40 dance/pop sing. Sometimes those can be fun when the students are jumping around and signing.

The ribbon scoreboard minus the adds seemed to actually work for once. I only noticed one pause/mistake between down and distance.

I like that the visitors were pushed up into the north end zone.

I did not notice some of those annoying ads like the geeky Cynex guy but maybe I missed them.

Liked the full screen replays but want to see more. Also want to see more live scores from other games as I did not notice them but maybe I missed them this time?

All in all it was nice to see some effort put in this time even if everything was not slam dunk perfect. Much improved.

I googled sponsorship of national anthem. Found that minor league baseball teams offer such sponsorship opportunities to willing sponsors. Seems just cheap and desperate.

Did they get rid of the smile and the burrito ads? Sure Don't like the advertising for the national anthem. Thanks for posting about that.

Sponsoring the national anthem is almost as offensive as the stupid tradition of coupling the national anthem with something as inconsequential and and trivial as a football game.

It's a dumb tradition. Really. Think about what is says about our society and what we consider solemn and important. I don't know what dumb@$$ started it, but I'd like to end it.

Perhaps I should recite the national anthem prior to my next game of Angry Birds, because Freedom.

Now I'm sure some of you gals have your panties in a bunch about my opinion here, but really, ask yourselves: WTF about a football game confers the importance and solemnity due the national anthem?

Score updates from other games were shown on the big video board...bottom left. Pretty much the entire game.

A few times, the feed got stuck on one game and froze for minutes on end.

I still hate seeing Thursday night scores, and repeatedly telling me that Wisky/LSU is an 8pm game. They probably have a generic national feed, but I'd prefer to see live games and B1G games given priority.

My phone had a signal yesterday, which was unusual. I don't know if they improved cell coverage, or if it was an outlier.

I gotta say the radio wasn't much better with the ad's. I was driving up to Okoboji and in the 4th quarter we had back to back plays. One was a "hammer hit" sponsored by some Hammer company followed next by a sack by Alston which was a nondescript company (melshyn???SP??) and a donation to the U of I hospitals. Call the damn game and quit trying to have a sponsor for every play or down. Dolph couldn't keep up and it sure takes away from listening to a game. Less is more always unless we are talking about beer…..

For 5 years now, starting 1 hour before the game to 1 hour after the game, my cell phone internet goes to zero. I have Verizon. Society is a lot different than it was even 10 years ago. Iowa really needs to install FREE wifi inside Kinnick Stadium, as other college stadiums have begun doing. I'm sure the college students would appreciate it greatly, and I would as well.

Actually I'm old school and could care less if they change music, etc However, I sat in my new Season tickets on Saturday and
happen to sit next to a pretty young gal, who is a big Hawkeye fan, too. She and I did the Panchero's Burrito lift (now a Hawkeye tradition), did the I O W A cheer and High 5'ed on TDs. She's a millennial, or younger and let' just say, I am older.

We both had a great Game Day experience.

Thank you Mr Gary Barta !! GO HAWKS
