For this write up I'm looking at a comparative analysis from each end of the coaching spectrum. On one hand we have coach A who has a safe game plan, and will always go with the approach to play ultra conservative when he has a small lead. Next we have coach B, who has the go for the throat mentality every time his team touches the football.
I think it's pretty easy to look back a few years and take two similar programs/coaches into the equation for this. It just so happens both coaches have strong ties to the Hawkeye program. Coach A almost without fail will get a small lead and play safe mistake free football.Time and time again we are in the fourth quarter holding our breath against what should be a less talented football team. Mean while, Coach B is hanging 60 and he's not letting up. He gives his players opportunities to break records, play for a Heisman, and possibly the national championship, or in this season's case the first playoff.
Some will say it's the talent.. others will say It's coach Davis! The thing is, I look at this team and see plenty of play makers at the skill positions, and ask myself over and over what would coach B do with this football team? Would we still see JR starting at QB because he's the safe pick? Possibly, I think Jake is a great game manager. The thing is, CJ can manage the game just like Jake does, but wait doesn't he throw a long ball like Russel Wilson? I think coach B would be playing our backup QB right now, and I will continue to wonder how long it takes for Coach A to put his team in position with the best chance to win football games.
Next we flip back to coach A and look at his style of coaching. I mean, there's really nothing wrong with it. His clock management sure, but his coaching style certainly works at elite levels of play. However, when you put the talent Iowa tends to land into perspective, it turns into a completely different situation. Do I think KF could go to Ohio State and win? Absolutely.. After all he and Tressel aren't much different, and we saw how JT did when he coached at tOSU. What about the NFL? I'm guessing KF would do fine with the talent he would constantly have in the pros. At Iowa though, I think we have all the proof we need. Leaving out how great of a guy KF is, and just basing this solely off of the production on the field, I think it's safe to say he just doesn't fit year in and year out with his coaching style at a program like Iowa. It's becoming tiresome to the point I almost can't stand watching games anymore. His teams consistently struggle with teams they shouldn't struggle with, and there's always the big let down right around the corner that kills off any chance at something special for the players and fans of the program/university. I'll support the team and KF until the end, but I really do think it's time for change.
While this didn't turn out exactly how I would of liked it to.. I do think it's interesting wondering how Biel's coaching style could change things in almost a complete 180.
