DC opening extended (again)

Iowa also posted a new position for an Assistant Head Coach on Jan 12, which also has a Jan 26 expiration. This is per ESPN. Connecting the dots it likely means Phil Parker having two titles and an outside hire being DC or Asst HC

interesting, i never heard that, good find.

With only two weeks left in recruiting, the hiring of a defensive coordinator is of no great concern. There is plenty of time after Feb. 1 to worry about hiring a defensive coordinator. The number one priority is recruiting.

Maybe, just maybe, the opening was extended because Ferentz doesn't want to deal with it until recruiting has been completed.

The Assistant HC thing is telling. You only do that to get someone to commit to a lateral type move, or to placate a coach who is being passed over on staff. I guess they could be placating Parker.

However, I could also imagine it being KF throwing a bone to KOK.

But, I agree that it could be to not have to deal with it during recruiting. Which either means you should have got it done sooner, or realize that you really have nothing to worry about.

Which might really be the case. The new Iowa DC is going to have one of the weakest classes of returning players in recent memory. Of the returning 11, there are no All-conference players and only two HM. The defensive line will need highly rated freshmen to play to even field a current two-deep. The Hawks haven't had a guy recruited at DT make it at Iowa since Colin Cole. So the odds are the team is going to have to do something really weird to field a defensive line. So, might as well just wait until after the recruiting period is over and let the guy not start with any significant expectations, which he would have little chance meeting.

sounds logical to me, but why have the early date in the first place?

what if he takes till mid february? will it still be obvious then?

Ferentz is obviously waiting on something. The only question is what.

If you honestly believe Ferentz doesn't have an idea of who his next DC is going to be, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

It very well could be that Parker is the guy and Ferentz just didn't feel it necessary to take him off the road to do the press tour.

i'm sure he has an idea, i'd even guess that its all but done. i just don't get how they've kind of dragged it along. KF should have just said upfront "i'm going to wait till recruiting is done to sort this out" or if it is phil, just announce it and have the conference later. we just had a dead period, you know.

I don't understand it either. I think once we've found out who it is, we'll be better able to understand the wait.

no kidding he has read all the hawk sites and decided to put his foot down and show everybody who's boss by extending the posting period

This looks to be very likely. Can't wait to see what happens so the cussin' and the discussin' can begin!

I looked at that posting and it says assistant football coach not assistant head coach. I'm not sure if there's a difference but that was my observation. I also noticed that when they were describing desirable experience that someone made a point to capitalize Professional Football coaching.

Yeah, it's not an assistant head coach. It would have to be Kaczenski's old job.

I wonder if the extension is an indication that the Hawks are in a bidding war for a big name coach like Randy Shannon. Likely not, but it's a theory worth considering.

It is because I am working on my coaching endorsement, and they are holding it open for my resume.

Qualifications:

Lifelong hawkeye fan
Realy good at second guessing decisions made by KF
Coached Sons flag football team
